FLORIDA INFORMATION
Based upon a lot of misinformation I thought I would dedicate a small portion of this web page to some interesting facts about Florida as well as some observations by the Bond News Letter. Please do not take the observations to seriously.
Nickname: The Sunshine State
State Flower: Orange Blossom
Number of Counties: 67
Legislature: 120 House Districts, 40 Senate Districts, 23 Congressional Districts
1) 40% of all US exports to Latin and South America pass through Florida.
2) Florida is the top travel destination in the world. The tourism industry has an economic impact of $67 billion to the Florida economy.
3) The space industry represents $4.1 billion in the Florida economy.
4 )Florida leads the southeast in farm income. Florida produces about 67% of the US oranges that account for about 40% of the world orange juice supply.
5) Largest city: Miami Dade. Miami Dade’s economy if it was an independent nation would be the 60th largest out of a 195 recognized nations in the world.
6) Over one thousand people move to Florida every year says Will Weatherford Florida House Speaker in 2013. I could not verify that however. My research came up with about 632 people come to Florida each year. Anyway Florida is the 3rd most populous state in the country according to the US Census Bureau.
7) Florida has 19 major commercial airports and 12 international airports.
8) Florida has 14 deep water ports.
9) There are 1200 miles of sand beaches in the state.
10) Florida has 1800 miles of coast line.
11) Florida has 1250 golf courses which is more than any other state. Palm Beach County has more than any other county in the US.
12) Florida has 370,000 hotel rooms.
13) Florida Total area: 58,560 sq miles. Land Area: 54,252 sq miles.
14) Heighest natural point: 345 feet (Britton Hill) near Lakewood in Walton County.
15) Florida has more than 11,000 miles of rivers, streams and waterways:
Longest river: St Johns at 273 miles.
16 )Largest Lake: Lake Okeechobee at 700 sq miles (the second largest fresh water lake in the US).
17) Largest County: Palm Beach County at 2578 sq miles.
18) Smallest County: Union County at 245 sq miles.
19) Number of first magnitude springs is 27. Florida has more first magnitude springs than any state in the union. First magnitude springs are those that discharge 2,800 liters per second
20) Where did Floridians come from? ….. It depends on who you talk to. But the general consensus is:
Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513 when he landed in Northeast Florida, possibly near the present day St Augustine In an effort to claim Florida for Spain. This is when written records about life in Florida began. What came before 1513 is up for grabs.
21) The first European settlement was established in 1565 in St Augustine by Spain.
22) Florida became a US territory in 1821. General Andrew Jackson served as the military governor until Congress ratified a territorial constitution.
William P. Duval was Florida’s first civil governor and called the first Legislative Council into session in Pensacola on June 19, 1823.
23) Florida was admitted to the US as a State on March 3, 1845, the 27th State.
24) The most populist Metropolitan areas of the State is the Gold Coast (Miami-Dade, Broward & Palm Beach Counties and has a population approximately 6 million residents. The Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater area is actually the second largest Metro area in Florida with approximately 3 million residents. Orlando/Kissimmee ranks third with approximately 2,200,000 residents. It is no surprise that Miami-Dade County has the largest population at 2,750,000. Liberty County has the smallest county with 8314 residents.

THE FLORIDA CODE
1) When giving directions in Florida, you must always start with the words “take I-75, take I-4, or take I-95.”
2) If you are a snow bird or an non-working retiree, you absolutely cannot drive between 6AM and 10 AM and 4PM and 7PM. This is considered to be RUSH HOUR and you are not in any rush. NO EXCEPTIONS.
3) Interstates can only go north and south not east and west with the exception of three Alligator Ally, I-4 and I-10.
4) Tolls are a fact of life. The State has to make money, so deal with it.
5) I-275 (Tampa area) will always be under construction. That is the law and no one can do anything about it.
6) A1A and Alt A1A are the same road.
7) Traffic lights are not timed and never will be.
8) We measure the distance we travel in time - not miles.
9) If you travel more than 5 to 10 miles on any road in Florida without seeing an orange barricade, your lost.
10) If you miss your exit on any interstate in Florida it is perfectly acceptable to back up.
11) Every road and street in Florida has both a name and a number. US 1/ Dixie HW, Adamo/ Rt 60 Etc. This gives us Florida resident’s great fun giving directions to tourist.
12) Once the light turns green, only 3 cars can go through the intersection, 8 more go through on yellow and 4 more on red.
13) You must know the difference between Sun Pass, Sun Fest, Sun Sentinel and Sun Trust.
14) Your blinker (turn signal) means nothing.
15) It is perfectly acceptable to brag about the size of your generator.
16) When a hurricane is headed your way, even when you have advance warning, you are not a true Floridian unless you wait to the last minute to go to Home Depot and Publix for supplies.
17) You must know how to spell Okeechobee. There is Okeechobee Lake, Town, County, Blvd, Street, and Avenue.
18) There is always a Walgreens across the street from a CVS on almost every corner.
19) When picking up a woman on South Beach, always check for an Adams apple.
20) There is a city called “The Villages’ where 77,000 old people live that all drive golf carts and dance in the streets.
21)There are 3 types of dolphins: Mahi-mahi, Flipper, and also a football team.
22) No matter what they do in Tallahassee (state capital) you will never, ever be able to figure out your property taxes.
23) Learn how to dress in layers. It can be 95 degrees outside. But inside any restaurant or business it’s 65 degrees.
